City preps up for Dia de Cesar, Nov. 14

Activities for the commemoration of the 34th death anniversary of Mayor Cesar Climaco are all set, beginning next week, November 12.

With the theme, Cesar And Me: Standing Firm, United For Integrity and Peace in the Nation, the city government together with partner organizations will spearhead a week-long lineup of activities to give tribute to one the city’s most and beloved leaders.

Commemorative activities will be held on November 12 with a wreath-laying ceremony at Cesar Climaco’s assasination site in Governor Alvarez Avenue, together with the JCI Zamboanga. This will be followed by a Night Vigil at 7:30 PM at the Climaco Freedom Park in Pasonanca.

On November 14, a commemorative mass and program will be held at Climaco Freedom Park at 7 AM. November 14 marks the day when Mayor Cesar Climaco was gunned down.

Mayor Beng Climaco, along with local officials, will lead the ceremonies and activities honoring the life and legacy of the late Cesar Climaco.

With the objective of building youth leaders, the 7th Cesar Climaco Young Leaders Assembly will be held at Centro Latino on November 17 at 6 PM, while the 23rd Speak Out Zamboanga: Youth Vote 2019 Engage Citizenship will take place on November 18 at 8 AM, Centro Latino.

Mayor Cesar Climaco was a prominent critic of the martial law regime of Ferdinand Marcos and was known for his personal courage and toughness in governance. He famously refused to cut his hair until democratic rule was restored in the Philippines.

He was shot dead on the morning of November 14, 1984 while rushing to the scene of a fire incident in downtown Zamboanga City. (Jasmine Mohammadsali)
