Zamboanga transport group against modernization plan

Local transportation operators in Zamboanga City yesterday disclosed that they are against the government’s jeepney modernization plan.

Ed Mingala, president of the Federation of Land Transportation of Zamboanga (FELTRANZ) said, they were supposed to participate in the transport strike last week which was called-off by PISTON.

“Si ya porsigui el protesta ta plania man kame todo participa para dale tamen mira con el Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) cay hinde came apavor con el modernization cay este cosa ay afecta con todo el maga operators del maga jeep y van,” Mingala said.

He expressed elation that PISTON, the organizer of the nationwide transport strike, has cancelled it thus passengers were not affected.

The operators are questioning the manner the modernization is going to be implemented by the concerned agency when they are made to register as members of a cooperative before they can avail the loan being offered by the government.

“El apprehension diamun cay baka suspende sila diamun frankisa, unless si tiene cooperative franchise,” Mingala said.

Under the modernization program, all Public Utility Jeeps and Vans should be fully airconditioned, wi-fi ready with television and should have a designated place for Persons with Disability (PWD).

One modern unit will cost P1.7 million and according to Mingala, this will entail problems to the members during the creation of the cooperative, the terminal and office that the government is asking them to produce.

The Senate has vowed to conduct an inquiry to listen to the sentiments of the transport groups. (BND)
