Newly promoted cop shot dead

A newly promoted senior policeman, who is formerly assigned with the police narcotics unit, was gunned down by two unidentified riding-in-tandem assailants at the interior portion of Cariño Compound, Barangay Camino Nuevo, this city, on Thursday night.

The fatality was identified as Senior Police Office 3 Ronnie Alar Adanza, 43, married, formerly detailed as Station Drug Enforcement Team (SDET) operative of Police Station 2 and presently assigned with the Criminal Investigation and Detective Management of Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) and a resident of the Barangay Camino Nuevo.

Initial investigation showed that SPO3 Adanza together with the operatives of the ZCPO and Police Station 2 conducted a buy-bust operation at the vicinity of Emcor establishment along Nuñez Extension where they arrested a certain Rodel Gonzales, 39, of Boa Drive, Barangay San Jose Gusu, this city.

Further report showed that at about 9:53 p.m. of Thursday, the victim was on his way home driving his motorcycle however, while entering the drive of Cariño Compound he stop and talked to his peers without sensing the perpetrator tailing him from behind.

A witness said that he heard successive gun bursts coming from behind SPO3 Adanza then he saw the cop fell from his motorcycle just few steps beside him.

The witness left the seriously wounded cop and ran towards the inner portion of the place to  seek help from the family.

The victim’s brother, also a policeman, responded to the crime scene where he found his brother lying on the road and badly wounded. He then rushed his elder borther to Ciudad Medical Zamboanga Hospital. However, his brother expired after few hours in the hospital.

Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) processed the crime scene and were able to recover three spent shells of Caliber .45 Pistol and the  motorcycle of the victim.

A deeper investigation is still being conducted by Police Station 11 to possibly identify the suspect as well as the motive behind the shooting.

The Investigation Section of Police Station 11 is also zeroing on the angel whether the shooting incident has something to do with the intensified crackdown against illegal drugs. (Eugene A. Lasprilla)
