Kidnapping, jailbreak mar Duterte's Sulu visit

Six Zamboangueños were kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf bandits and at least 14 inmates bolted a town jail in Sulu, marring a visit by President Rodrigo Duterte to the wounded soldiers on Saturday afternoon.

Reports from the Patikul Municipal Police Station indicated that at around 1:30 a.m., gunmen entered the Kawpang Elementary School Sports Complex in Barangay Bangkal.and dragged the victims, but one of them escaped

The victims were identified as Joel Adanza, Felimon Jung Guerrero, Edmundo Ramos, Jayson Ramos Vailosis, all are residents of Barangay Tumaga; and Jenly Miranda of Barangay Pasonanca, Zamboanga City.

Ramos' wife told local reporters in an interview at his residence that the Abu Sayyaf bandits have demanded P1 million ransom each in exchange for the release of each victim.

She said the ransom demand was relayed to them through a mobile phone by a man who identified himself as a member of the Abu Sayyaf group under sub-leader Ajang-Ajang who claimed responsibility for the abduction.

With the latest kidnapping, the number of hostages of the Abu Sayyaf groyp has increased to 25, including 16 foreigners and 9 Filipinos.

Prior to the kidnapping of construction workers on Saturday, at least 14 prisoners bolted the Jolo Municipal Police Station.

Supt. Mario Buyucan, provincial police director, confirmed the 1:25 a.m. jailbreak at detention cells in Sulu's capital town.

He said three of the 14 escapees have been killed in pursuit operations. One of escaping inmates was reportedly wounded.

With the latest abduction, the number of kidnap victims of the Abu Sayyaf has increased to 25, including 16 foreigners and 9 Filipinos.

Early January of this year, Duterte ordered the military to crush the ASG in six months to one year to put an end to kidnappings and other terroristic activities once and for all.

The president also offered a P1-million bounty for the capture or death of each ASG member to finish off the bandits and give them no second chances in life, except to feel remorse. Hader Glang
