CONSEJO DE INVESTIGACION Y DESAROLLO DEL LENGUAJE CHABACANO AT 3

The only Chabacano organization in the city, “Asia’s Latin City” is celebrating its third year anniversary on September  23, 2018 at Crystal Room of Grand Astoria Hotel, this city.

Only three (3) years ago, on September 23, it has now reached 65 members strong, still counting, pledging the unique language of Zamboanga City—CHABACANO in its original orthography, no matter what others will say to the contrary.

Chabacano: 12 million people speak and understand Chabacano around the world.

CHABACANO: THE ONLY SPANISH-BASED CREOLE SURVIVED FOR 400 YEARS

Former Prime Minister Cesar Virata, President of the Cavite Historical Society in his keynote speech, recognized Chabacano as one of the oldest creole languages in the world and the only creole Spanish in Asia (National Chabacano Conference: Preserving a Cultural Heritage, November 10, 2010).

Chabacano speakers are found in the town of Semporna, Eastern Coast of Sabah, Malaysia, because this northern part of Borneo is close to Sulu islands and the Zamboanga Peninsula.

MARIA CLARA LOBREGAT ORGULLO CHABACANO AWARDS

Distinguished Zamboangueños who have devoted their lives in the preservation, protection and promotion of Chabacano will be duly recognized on September 23, 2018 at the Crystal Room of the Grand Astoria with Congressman Celso L. Lobregat as the main presenter to the living Zamboangueños the Maria Clara L. Lobregat Orgullo Chabacano Awards wherein two will be recognized posthumously, five living, one office of the city government, one civic organization and one popular food establishment.

8. Zamboanga City Rotary Central (Special Citation)

9. Jollibee-Camins (Special Citation)

Dr. Milagros Fernandez, M.D. Chairs, the Awards Committee and Dr. Roberto B. Torres, Ed. D. is the president of the Consejo Chabacano, for short.

On September 21-23,  Exhibits of What is Chabacano will be shown at the lobby of the Grand Astoria Hotel with Mr. Danny Lim, General Manager, Grand Astoria Hotel will open the exhibits on September 21 with Dr. Torres assisting.

Ms. Ellie Ramchand, Manager, Great Vacations Travel and Tours, located at Grand Astoria Hotel is in charge of the exhibits. (By Prof. Ali T. Yacub)
