STAR: A must in Classroom Clinical Observation and Supervision
Wednesday, 09 November 2011 11:14
In this era of information technology, and pupils bombarded with all kinds of media exposures, there is a need for a consistent and strong classroom clinical observation and supervision so that the goals in teaching will be achieved.
In Clinical supervision, a teacher should conduct friendly observation which should not be judgmental and non-provoking. The ones conducting classroom observation, particularly administrators, principals or observers should not put the teacher being observed in a situation leading to a debate.
The teacher for her part, should realize his or her mistakes or shortcomings through the constructive question or questions of the principal.
In the classroom clinical observation, the acronym STAR should and must always be used and followed. ST for situation/task. The observer will have to state in his/her statement, the situation as far as the lesson is concerned and where the observation is being done, whether it is negative or positive.
Once the situation has been stated, and the teacher clearly understood what he or she is being observed, and whether the observation is positive or negative, the observer will now relate to the ACTION or what action did the teacher took or done.
After the process of statement and action taken by the teacher on a particular lesson, it is up now to check on the result on the pupils. A feedback mechanism will be put in place so that teachers will have the chance to know if they succeed or failed in meeting the objectives.
At the end of the STAR, an agreement has to be reached between the observer and the teacher on the expectation from her in the next lesson, an agreement not to commit the same mistake, if there is any.
