Due to the rampant carnapping incidents that occurred recently in Zamboanga City, the members of the Regional Highway Patrol Unit 9 have intensified its random checkpoint in strategic areas of the city.

SPO4 Edwin Ocupe, leader of Special Operations Team B, told local reporters no less than RHPU Regional Chief Sr. Supt. Romeo Razon Uy has divided them into two groups so they could cover many areas of the city.

"This morning several motorists were apprehended for many traffic violations such as no helmets, no license, no registration, no side mirrors and others," he said.

Also the driver of a multicab who tried to elude the checkpoint along Baliwasan Moret was chased by one of the motorcycle cops and arrested.

The traffic cops impounded the vehicle when the young driver failed to present the vehicle's registration and driver's license.

Earlier, City Police Director Sr. Supt. Edwin de Ocampo gave a one week ultimatum to the members of the Anti Carnapping Task Force because of the rampant incidents of carnapping mostly Honda motorcycles.

De Ocampo said the stolen motorcycles are being taken to Sulu and Basilan via motorlaunch and sold to prospective buyers at very low price.

The motorcycle engines are used for pumpboats , according to De Ocampo.

Because of the ultimatum members of the anti carnapping team has arrested several suspected car thieves in series of raids in the city.
