The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BFAR-ARMM) is gearing up for the conduct of the first-ever ARMM seaweeds congress this September in Zamboanga City.

Janice Musali, BFAR-ARMM assistant regional director, said the event is fully-backed by the present ARMM administration and expected to draw in major stakeholders in the seaweeds business.

Musali said they will be inviting top seaweeds producers and buyers in the region as well as prospective investors and representative from credit institutions and non-government organizations.

“We want to take full advantage of the abundant supply of seaweeds in the region as captured in the congress’ theme: ‘Setting Grounds for Harnessing ARMM’s Seaweeds Potentials’,” she said.

ARMM accounts for 40 percent of the country’s total seaweeds production.

“Right now, ARMM only supplies dried raw seaweeds. Our goal is for the region to go into the production of semi-processed and refined seaweeds products,” Musali said. (BPI-ARMM/PIA-10/BST)
