The potential agricultural product that Region IX can look into is rubber, according to officials of the Department of Agriculture (DA).

No less than Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala revealed that “Ang number one potential dito iyong rubber industry.”

Alcala made the statement after he made rounds in the region, particularly Zamboanga Sibugay. He was able to talk to fishermen and farmers.

Rubber is being planted in the areas of Zamboanga Sibugay, other parts in the Region including Basilan, and even here in this city.

“Kailangan magtulongan ang pribadong sector at local government unit para i-integrate iyong programa para sa ganon maka pag sulong tayo ng mas mataas na antas sa ating produkto,”Alcala said.

According to Alcala, the office can invite some foreign or local investor so the rubber can be processed and turned into finished product.  

It will take years before rubber trees can be harvested, the latex is gather, then processed to turn into finish product.
