WMSU awards two outgoing Regents

PDFPrintE-mail

The Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) the only “Royal University” in Mindanao and the Visayas celebrated its 114th Founding Anniversary last July 18, 2018 at the university campus.

The actual date of the founding of the Provincial Normal School (now WMSU) established by the American administration was on July 17, 1901 much earlier than the University of the Philippines, according to WMSU’s historical narrative.

Thousands of students, faculty members including prominent dignitaries, notably, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Regional Director, Dr. Emmylou B. Yanga who was back to Zamboanga City after a long absence while performing her duty as Regional Director in NCR until her returned to the city, attended the celebration.

During the opening program held at the Dr. Juanito A. Bruno Gymnasium in WMSU main campus, Dr. Milabel E. Ho, President of WMSU bestowed the Medallions to outgoing members of the Board of Regents; Engr. Alvin Miguel, President, Faculty Union, and Mr. Ibhohajar L. Binang, President, University Student Council whose term as members of the Board of Regents of the University ended this academic year.

This was followed by the message of Prof. Ali T. Yacub, Al-Hj, president, Retirees Association of WMSU (RAW) who narrated the origins of WMSU’s “Royal University” title. Prof. Yacub, was the main personality who was responsible in the bestowal of the royal title as “Royal University” by the “Ruma Bichara” on April 16, 2005 through a Royal Resolution passed by the former and the Royal Proclamation by the Sultan Muazzam HRH Ibrahim Bahjin Shakirullah II on July 20, 2005 at ceremonies held at the university campus which WMSU celebrates this year its 13th year as a Royal University, according to Prof. Yacub.

In the recollection of Prof. Yacub said, its only the WMSU that the Sultanate of Sulu had ever bestowed such royal accolade, never was any honor to institution before that date was accorded by the Sultanate’s hundred years history, to this day.

Prof. Yacub, further recalled, it was because four royal princesses who first acquired their higher education at the Provincial Normal School as scholars of the American administration, they were: Princess Tarhata Kiram, Princess Putli-Intau Julkarnain, Princess Indah Taas Abirin and Princess Piandao Kiram moved the royal datus to issue the Resolution granting the title to WMSU. Therefore, Prof. Yacub, said WMSU hopefully will pay tribute to those royal princesses who were the “compelling reasons” why the Sulu Sultanate bestowed such royal title never granted to any institution in the country up to recent time.

Earlier, Dr. Ho delivered a message on the theme: “WMSU: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” anchoring on looking forward for more developments after the many successes WMSU had through the years, with great hopes now the university is on the threshold of the best that is about to come.

Dr. Ma. Carla A. Ochotorena, Vice President for Academic Affairs gave the welcome message and Dr. Joselito D. Madroñal, Vice President for Admin and Finance gave the closing message followed by lunch for the many guests and officials and faculty of the university.  (Albert F.
